Simone Says: Not Your Average Market

New York City’s Chelsea Market Copenhagen’s Glass Market London’s Borough Market Barcelona’s La Boqueria Market Tel Aviv’s Sarona Market

What do these all have in common? Yeah, okay “market”, but these international landmarks fall nowhere short of serving the world’s best assortment of international treats. These markets serve as culinary hotspots for locals and tourists alike; from authentic food to intercontinental favorites, there will always be something for everyone at these markets. The feeling of being engulfed in culture is my favorite pastime, so I go exploring any chance I get.

Living in Tel Aviv this summer, I lived only a short 8-minute walk to Sarona Market, so whenever I didn’t want to cook dinner, I’d head on over to Sarona and pick up some of Israel’s finest food. That being said, I did live a short walk away from the market, but I also worked in the skyscraper above Sarona Market, so every day’s lunch break would be spent picking out a new dish at a new stand in the eatery. Today I’m going to share with you some of my favorite #eats from Tel Aviv’s Sarona Market.

Ze Sushi Specialty: Sushi, yes, but great Japanese dishes and fresh fish all around. What I got: I honestly don’t remember the name of the roll; I tried looking it up, however their online menu is all in Hebrew, so I had no luck. But my roll had shrimp tempura, fresh tuna, avocado and veggies in a cucumber wrap.

Fiori Specialty: Build your own bowl of pasta! Their pasta is made fresh daily, so you’re guaranteed a special bowl all for you. What I got: Whole wheat penne trio with fresh marinara and mozzarella balls. Nice and simple, great service too; since I was on my lunch break, this needed to come out fast.

Planeta Specialty: Located outside of Sarona Market but still in the area, Planeta specializes in organic, fresh meat, salad, and veggies. What I got: Every day was something different; I’d get a to-go plate with three compartments… one large for protein and two small for salads or a starch. In the first photo, I got chicken shawarma with tahini, a root salad with beets and carrots, and roasted potatoes. In the right picture, I zoomed into my quinoa salad and tomato/onion salad.

Segev Concept Specialty: Authentic Israel and Middle Eastern food; think falafel, hummus, and chicken galore. What I got: homemade hummus with chicken shawarma on top, drizzled with tahini, oil and garnished with cilantro and parsley. One of my favorite meals in Israel… I think about this meal daily and I dream of going back soon to relive my glory days.

Meat Bar Specialty: Burgers! According to my personal ranking, this is one of the top 3 burgers in Tel Aviv. Juicy and perfectly cooked (and overpriced), this hit the spot every time. What I got: A burger, duh!

To top this post off, I found my favorite ice cream place in the entire world… no exaggeration. Proceed with caution…

Anita Specialty: Gelato and ice cream of the most peculiar yet fabulous flavors. Plus, their employees were these beautiful Israeli men that would make you the most perfect cup of ice cream… think tall, dark and handsome. What I got: I think I tried all of their flavors at one point, but my favorites were always the chocolate pretzel (back middle) which was chocolate-based ice cream with thick caramel drizzles and salty pretzel chips throughout, and the watermelon and fresh mint (front right) which was was always a fresh burst of flavor.

Summer body #szn didn’t last too long with my summer-long food coma being a constant presence. However, by living and working near or on top of Sarona Market, I was able to experience a whole culture of food in about one square acre. I wouldn’t trade my summer eating for anything, even though I’m in desperate need for a gym membership right about now!

Let’s hope I get back to Tel Aviv soon!
