Simone Says: Taste the Rainbow

Something’s fishy here – I haven’t written anything in over a week, so here I am, inviting you to view my dinner from last night. We were celebrating an accomplishment of mine and I requested to go out to eat; my dad didn’t have to ask and he knew exactly what I wanted to get for dinner. We went to Daruma in Englewood, New Jersey, for sushi and other Japanese fine eats.

Since we go to Daruma often, there isn’t much time spent looking at the menu as we all know what we want the moment we sit down. Sometimes I have hot green tea and last night, my parents enjoyed red wine. The appetizers we had were nothing new: the chicken lettuce wrap for me and my dad, and a spring roll for my mom.

This is the Thai Chicken Lettuce Wrap. It comes with chicken pieces, edamame, red peppers and other little things to make the flavor as distinct as it is. It lays on a bed of angel hair chip things and has a side of sweet sauce. To eat it, you place it into a piece of lettuce and bite in! Caution: make sure a napkin is nearby as this starter is very messy.

This is the Vietnamese Spring Roll. It is a rice paper wrap stuffed with shrimp, cucumber shreds, lettuce and cucumbers (we also get it without the avacado). The peanut sauce on the side is an amazing touch to this light starter.

Unfortunately, the service was pretty slow, especially as it was a Sunday night and there weren’t many people there. But I still received my entrée – the Rainbow roll. It’s one of my two favorites – my dad got the other roll that I usually get – the Passage to India roll. It is actually pretty interesting as instead of rice, it comes in an Indian style pancake… creative! Coming back to my meal, the Rainbow Roll isn’t spicy, but every bite is certainly different as every bite is different in its own way.

The rainbow roll includes crab and avocado, wrapped in the traditional rice and seaweed, and then topped off with some kind of combination of avocado, tuna, salmon or yellowtail.

The title of this post is called “taste the rainbow”, and even if it’s the slogan for Skittles, I had a different kind of rainbow. Daruma is always reliable with serving some fantabulous soosh!! As I may have mentioned in my introductory blog post, this blog may end up being a walking advertisement for the restaurants where I eat, but it’s okay because I believe that everyone needs to understand that the sushi here is really really amazing. To end off, here are some words of advice for when you’re having sushi: if the meal is taking a while to get to you, hold up your chopsticks and say “chop chop” and it will surely do the trick; if not, make like a sushi roll and roll on out of the restaurant.
