As school is coming to an end, some may say they have a bad case of “senioritus”, the act of having no motivation to do any school work like it’s their second semester of senior year. Usually, seniors have this so-called “disease”, but it’s never to early to start slacking off during freshman year (just kidding-I’m a dedicated student hahaha). These days, teachers don’t give much work, sports are over and thankfully, the light at the end is summer, so we are all looking forward to that. I spend my days with friends in pools, Netflixing (yes, that’s a verb), and finding parents to drive us to lunch. The girls and I like going to little cafés, sometimes we order in Chinese food, but we mostly enjoy traveling to “trendy” or new “basic” places. They don’t need to be glamorous or have excellent service, we just need the food to be presented well so we can continue to “do it for the ‘gram” (taking a good picture so you can upload it to Instagram).
Our most recent adventure was to the Filling Station. It’s a grill that serves the usual hamburgers and hotdogs, but you can add any type of cheese, plus bacon and onions and mushrooms and so much more… The idea is to “fill you up” with greasy, juicy hamburger heaven. Since it’s just a hut off of a highway, I bet it doesn’t visually attract many people driving past, but I must say that the aroma definitely caught my attention.
Now to get to the actual food: I must say, this was an insane burger. Because it was so perfectly grilled and there was juice dripping down as I bit into it, it made the experience much more pleasurable. I decided to ditch the American cheese like on a traditional cheeseburger and I had Swiss cheese instead. I was feeling the lettuce and tomato combo as well, so I got that. It was nice to know that even a grill that serves burgers and hotdogs all the time can accommodate vegetarians as well, as they served some great looking veggie burgers. I had a choice of a regular bun or lettuce on the top and bottom of my burger, but I kept it classy with the bun, the obvious toasted sesame bun. We sat down at a nearby picnic table and, no we didn’t start eating, we took pictures…
Pictured here is my masterpiece: the burger, amazing fries and mom’s iced tea (yes, my mom ate lunch with me and the girls, also because it was her turn to drive so she had to be there.. thanks mom I love you)
At the end of the day, my friends and I were satisfied – we had a solid lunch, bonded with each other and Instagrammed some fantabulous photos.
“Lettuce” take a moment and hope that this summer will be FILLED with amazing #eats, witty captions to match your food and that you surround yourself with people who won’t judge you if you take a while to snap a pic of your meal to capture the moment. You may be “grilling” in the heat, but you must take a snap of your ice cream, you may be red as a tomato after a run on the beach and still capture a selfie with some watermelon, and you may be as fried from the beach as my French fries were today, but still snap that shot of those homemade ice pops for July 4th that you made. Enjoy the summer the way it’s supposed to be enjoyed; doing what you love, catching up on books or finding a new hobby, like starting a blog! But on the other hand, if you’re working and you don’t have the opportunity to taste the salty beach air, find something to look forward to, like a date, a movie night with friends or a nice dinner with the fam (because food can always bring the fam back together). Now I can say that I am happy to be a freshman and that I don’t have real “senioritus”, otherwise that would probably mean that I’ll be working; so I’m going to enjoy every day this summer and do what I love. To close this post, I would like to say loud and clear… The summer, the sun is out, (hamburger) buns are out and tongues are out, too. Yum!
