Simone Says: Food and Fun in the Sun

Sun is fun, and so is summertime. Biking outdoors, falling asleep on a comfy hammock – nothing beats that. Especially when it’s the dead of winter and a big, heavy snowfall comes around and you can’t leave the house without your heaviest coat, it’s nice to get away to paradise-like a sunny-and-80-all-day, palm tree-filled land. A little while ago, my mom and I went to Florida for a quick getaway. We stayed at my mom’s sister’s house – a beautiful, airy house with a pool in a gated community. I spent my days lying by the pool, occasionally shopping and, of course, eating my “beach body” away.

In Florida, everything is fresh, everyone is tan and everyone is well-fed. The first full day, I had lunch downtown, outside of the housing community where my aunt lives, where trendy shops lay to my advantage. We went to a Greek restaurant where salads and other fresh meals were featured. My aunt, uncle, my mom and I all had the same thing: the house Greek salad topped with grilled calamari. I must say – this was the most amazing salad I’ve ever had with calamari on top… This was actually the first salad I’ve had with calamari, but that’s beside the point. Here’s a snap of the salad:

The next day, we went to a nearby beach to a restaurant with a beautiful view of the ocean… so beautiful that I snapped a photo and it’s currently my lock screen on my phone. This restaurant was open and light and airy, which definitely added a good vibe that made the meal a lot better. This was one of those places where everything appealed to me and I couldn’t decide, but I ended up getting a swordfish wrap. Wow… that wrap was amazing.

Surprisingly, the name of the restaurant is “JB’s” and I’m a big fan of Justin Bieber, so that was exciting.

That night, we went to a nearby sushi place, which is apparently the local place-to-be. The decor was club-like, with couches and dimmed lights. That night, we got a LOT of sushi. I got a bento box, which included a sample of shrimp tempura, sashimi, other pieces of fish and a California roll. Here’s a snippet:

My meal honestly looked so good that when I took this picture, I posted it on Instagram as well.

The next day, we went to Delray Beach, which included a street of high-end shops and great restaurants. Surprisingly, I went to this restaurant and saw some familiar faces from New Jersey, so that was fun. For lunch, I got the quinoa salad with shrimp and arugula. Although I don’t have a photo, it was pretty good. After we shopped for a while, we went to Kilwin’s ice cream for a sweet treat. This ice cream was AMAZING and I enjoyed every bite of my small cup of ice cream.

The last afternoon before my flight back to cold New Jersey, we went to this cafe called the Farmer’s Table. We walked up to the front which featured a garden with fresh herbs that I later found on in my meal. We started off with a thin flatbread with mushrooms and goat cheese. Oh my gosh – it was so good. Here’s a snippet:

It was perfectly toasted with the perfect seasonings that complimented every flavor of the flatbread pizza nicely.

For an entré, I had someone called “spasta balls” which were balls of quinoa. They were so good as they were prepared with spaghetti squash, red sauce and freshly melted mozzarella cheese. Besides being healthy (if you’re not counting the cheese), it held me over for the rest of the day.

Thank you, Florida, for another great reason to get away. Next up, I’m off to Sweden, Norway and Denmark and I hope to try the newest European favorites while I’m over on the other side of the Atlantic.
