Simone Says: Camp Times are the Greatest!

The crackle of the campfire, s’mores marshmallows all over your fingers and the crunch of the graham crackers can definitely bring back some toasty camp memories from back in the day. Although the mosquito bites can get quite annoying, the idea of getting shipped off to camp for a few weeks can be comforting as you are living with other kids that are there to have a good time just like you are.

Of course, one shouldn’t go camping expecting a five-course meal with cloth napkins and waiters. Instead, I can find foam plates, flimsy forks, and plastic cups. Pitchers are filled up by the bunkmate who’s the last to put their finger on their nose or moves when the person who finishes the pitcher yells “freeze”. Girls cheer in the dining hall so they can get called up to the food lines and the tables are close enough that it’s often hard to get to your seat if it’s next to the wall. But the experience of the camp dining hall and the excitement when your favorite meal is being served is all worth it.

Within the past few weeks, us campers have been fed well, despite the cheesy goo that we’ve been given sometimes. We are also given the chance to have a cooking elective where we bake sweet treats and we can show it off to everyone else. I’ve also had outdoor cooking where food is made over a fire, including the classic s’mores. Here are some shots of camp eats that I’ve been enjoying.

Here is a snap of my s’mores from a few days ago. It was like any other classic s’mores which includes a graham cracker on top and bottom, campfire roasted marshmallows and Hershey’s chocolate that ends up melting all over the marshmallow.

Another outdoor cooking treat was “banana boats” which were marshmallows and chocolate melted in a banana that’s partially scooped out and sits under the flames of a fire for 10 minutes.

I am currently on a trip right now visiting colleges in the Philly area with my camp, so I’ve been eating out for lunch and dinner. Of course, my first instinct is to take a picture of my food and I say “do it for the blog”. So here was my lunch while visiting Penn State…

As an appetizer, I split these mozzarella balls with my friend. To be honest, they were so cheesy and crispy and amazing, we got two orders of it. It was great!!

The rest of my meal included a veggie burger. I felt a need to have this burger over an original burger. It came crispy and warm, and the lettuce and tomato were both very fresh. Although the burger didn’t taste amazing, it was still fine.

For dinner, we went to an organic grocery store and market, Wegmans, and I ended up getting a freshly-made California roll, but with tuna instead to change it up a bit. The rice was brown with quinoa so that was also a nice change as well.

At Penn State, there was their famous Creamery where they make their own ice cream. Our tour guide told us that there are two rules at the creamery: only blue or white sprinkles (school colors) and one cannot mix flavors because they believe that every flavor is perfect the way it is, as they make it themselves.

As I visited the University of Pennsylvania, we went to Cosi Cafe. Like the classic Panera Bread, I had the option of “take two” and I got a mini sandwich and a mini salad. The sandwich was a melt with chicken, cheese and pesto sauce on multigrain bread. The salad was a “slim salad” with corn, kale, romaine, beans, and a few more extras. The meal was quick, easy and fresh on a hot day.

So, this summer menu is SIMply great, and I hope to be able to capture many more snaps of my snacks and meals as the days go on.
